We can't believe this is the last week in Phase 2 of the Fit Family Challenge! You all have done such a great job so far and with the Holiday's quickly approaching, we wanted to share a few tips to get you through the upcoming feasts. Thanksgiving is all about recognizing and celebrating the things in our lives we are thankful for so what better way to kick off the holiday season than by taking care of our bodies and our health.
Tip #1 (MIND): Sure, it is very hard - almost impossible - to say no to the overwhelming and delicious servings of macaroni and cheese, cornbread, apple pies and stuffing coming our way. But guess what, you don't have to. As we've touched on a few times during the challenge, healthy eating is about portion control and moderation, not restriction. If you're going to indulge in the carb-heavy items, make sure you're following the MyPlate guidelines and also including some veggies and protein.
Tip #2 (BODY): For some, watching football is a favorite Thanksgiving tradition. This year, try playing football or incorporating other fun activities to get everyone on their feet and moving around. Are there ways to clear off the table and still get your heart rate up? What about trying out family challenges like sack races across the lawn? Have fun and think of this day as a time to be with family while still working on your healthy lifestyles.
Tip #3 (SOUL): When going around the table this year, in addition to saying what you are thankful for, provide a few encouraging words for the person to your left. It can be difficult to stick to our healthy habits around the holidays so tell that family member or friend "You are doing great at ___" or “I love how committed you are to ___". Not only will this give them that extra push but it will also motivate you to stay on track.
How are you planning on staying healthy this Thanksgiving? What recipes are you trying and what fun activities do you have planned for your families? Leave a comment below! And we’d love to see some of your photos from the Holidays so please feel free to share them via firstname.lastname@example.org.
